When the world of the Orcs of Draenor is being destroyed by the evil fel magic that uses life-force, the powerful warlock Gul'dan creates a portal to the world of Azeroth and forms the Horde with members of the Orc clans.
He also captures many prisoners to keep the portal open. The king of Azeroth, Llane Wrynn and his brother-in-law, Anduin Lothar are informed by the apprentice of magician Khadgar that he has found fel magic in dead bodies and the king decides to summon the Guardian of Tirisfal, Medivh, to protect his kingdom.
Lothar and Khadgar head to Kharazhan to meet Medivh and an ominous shadow points a book out to Khadgar, who takes it and hides.
Anduin, Khadgar and Medivh and a group of soldiers are attacked by Orcs and they capture the slave Garona, who is released by King Llane, and she shows them the location of the portal.
Garona is contacted by the Orc chief of a clan Durotan that wants to meet King Llane to stop the fel magic. Meanwhile Khadgar learns that the gate was I had no idea what was going on most of the time because I'm not particularly familiar with Warcraft's story.

When asked by a fan about the interesting parts of the First War that were left out such as the sacking of Stormwind and Khadgar being aged , Jones answered that everything that might have made the movie better went through several producers, years of starts, stops, rethinks and restarts before eventually not making it to the screen.
He described the experience as fighting a war and the film as being the sum of the victories he won.
Warcraft opened to highly negative critical reviews. In contrast, the film's initial box office performances were highly successful, opening in the 1 slot in 19 of 20 territories during its opening weekend, and in 45 out of 51 territories as of its third week.
IMDB reports a 7. The film found its strongest opening weekend reception in Russia and Germany, followed by France, and set records in some European countries.
The film's DVD release starting in September may add to its overall earnings. Two months after the end of its cinema run, the film began a staggered global release on DVD and Blu-ray.
The film's success in China is believed to be due in part to the strong popularity of the Warcraft franchise in the country, which is estimated to be home to half of all World of Warcraft players in the world.
The film's global premiere was held 6 June, , at The Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, four days before the release of the film in the US.
The event was streamed on the official Twitch channel, where it was presented by Michele Morrow and Jesse Cox.
An unexpected addition was the actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her son Tom, who cosplayed as an orc shaman and warrior, respectively, as well as Ben Schulz, better known as Leeroy Jenkins.
An official highlight selection from the premiere stream can be found here. While only limited numbers of Blizzard employees were invited to the official premiere, an "exclusive employee screening" was held on 8 June, at the Irvine Spectrum Theatre, which director Duncan Jones also attended.
Purchasing a ticket for the film at certain cinemas in certain countries will grant a free digital copy of World of Warcraft , and in many cases an additional 30 days of game time.
Those purchasing the tickets are given a card with a code which can be redeemed on the official site to unlock the free copy.
Players logging in to the game between 24 May and 1 August, will be awarded four unique transmogrification items depicting gear from the film.
Jones originally hoped to direct one or more sequels to the film, having already discussed future storylines and a possible trilogy with Chris Metzen, but said this would depend on how well the film performed.
In June , Jones elaborated that he had planned for a trilogy of films telling one cohesive story, after which he would have handed the reins to someone else to adapt the better known parts of Warcraft lore.
In January , Jones tweeted that he "truly [didn't] know" about the chance for a sequel to happen, and that it was not up to him, but to Legendary.
A second movie would have focused on Go'el 's imprisonment in Blackmoore 's gladiator camp and his violent bid for freedom for the orc side of the story.
In the camp, Go'el would have befriended a tauren who'd tell him of a land to the west where Go'el might find allies and a new home. The flying city of Dalaran would have landed in the Alterac Mountains, and magic would've proliferated as the Kirin Tor tried to be more open after the death of King Llane.
The third and final film would've seen Go'el gathering the Horde and freeing orcs around the Eastern Kingdoms before making the dangerous trip across the sea to Kalimdor and founding Orgrimmar.
In essence, the trilogy would revolve around the fulfilling of Durotan's promise to give his people a new home.
Blizzard still holds the licence to the IP. As of November , they have had conversations with Legendary, and are still trying to figure out what's best for the franchise, whether it's something episodic, a theatrical movie, a feature film, or anything else.

Durotan challenges Gul'dan to Mak'gora, a duel to the death for leadership of the orcs. During the fight, Gul'dan violates the honorable combat rules by draining the life out of Durotan with his magic, killing him and earning the disapproval of the orcs watching, and he empowers Blackhand with the same magic.
Medivh, now in a half-demonic state, starts to open the portal to Draenor, and Gul'dan begins sacrificing the captured human villagers to allow the rest of the Horde to enter Azeroth.
Llane leads the human army in an assault on the orc camp, while Lothar and Khadgar fight Medivh and destroy the demon that had begun to manifest on the outside.
Medivh is mortally wounded, and uses the last of his strength to close the portal to Draenor and instead open a portal to Stormwind, allowing Llane to evacuate most of the freed prisoners.
Medivh dies and the portal closes, leaving Llane, Garona and a small number of human soldiers to fight the orcs.
Llane secretly orders Garona to kill him, bringing her honor among the orcs and putting her in a position of power to bring peace between the two races.
Garona reluctantly does so and is welcomed into the Horde by Gul'dan. Lothar arrives to retrieve King Llane's body, but is confronted by Blackhand, who challenges Lothar to Mak'gora, with Lothar defeating him.
Against Gul'dan's demands, the orcs, bound by tradition, allow Lothar to depart with Llane's body.
During Llane's funeral, the leaders of the other human nations, along with the high elves and dwarves , proclaim an alliance against the orcs and support Lothar as the leader of the Alliance.
Elsewhere, Orgrim takes one of Durotan's tusks to one day give Go'el, and the basket containing Go'el is found by a human. Terry Notary provides the voice and motion-capture for Grommash Hellscream, the orc chieftain of the Warsong Clan, though the part is listed in the credits as Peon.
Notary also served as stunt coordinator and movement coach for the film, working with cast members Kebbell, Kazinsky, Brown, Wu and Galvin on their portrayals of the orcs, and with Foster on his portrayals of magic.
Glenn Close makes an uncredited appearance as Alodi, an ancient mage locked in an artifact within Dalaran, described as "the Guardian before there was a Guardian".
Chris Metzen , who served as a co-producer and uncredited story writer for the film, and is the Senior Vice-President of Story and Franchise Development at Blizzard Entertainment and the voice of Thrall in the Warcraft franchise , makes an uncredited cameo appearance as a turbaned perfume vendor on the streets of Stormwind Kingdom.
The project was officially announced in May with Blizzard initially wanting it to be set in the universe of the real-time strategy Warcraft: Orcs and Humans video game from This setting was later dropped because Blizzard decided that it would be too similar to The Lord of the Rings.
Uwe Boll made a bid to direct, but was turned away by Blizzard, who he claims to have said, "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you… especially not to you.
Because it's such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income, what the company has with it.
With Blizzard's approval who had also been looking to change the story , Jones altered the story so that "It's Jones thus summed up the challenge by telling The New York Times , "My film started and ended with cancer.
Principal photography began on January 13, , and lasted for four months, finishing on May 23, It can be done well and it can be done shit.

Warcraft was set to be released on December 18, , but following the announcement of the coinciding release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , the release was pushed back to the following year.
Worldwide, it is the highest-grossing film of all time based on a video game breaking Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ' s record.
Warcraft was released in a total of 65 countries from June to August , and international territories were expected to produce better results than in North America.
It received the widest Chinese release ever, occupying an unprecedented The website's critical consensus reads, " Warcraft has visual thrills to spare, but they — and director Duncan Jones' distinctive gifts — are wasted on a sluggish and derivative adaptation of a bestselling game with little evident cinematic value.
Geoff Berkshire of Variety criticized the film's attempts at adapting a source material with "inherent ridiculousness" with regard to how the original game series was not meant to have a very deep narrative: "[I]t's an unwaveringly earnest film that never owns up to exactly how campy every character, every conflict and every new realm truly is.
Dowd of The A. Conversely, Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter gave a more favourable review, citing the performances and story as highlights.
With the film's storyline leaving Warcraft open to possible sequels, Jones has expressed interest in a sequel to the film, likely to be adapted from Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness , the second video game in the Warcraft franchise.
