Mother! - Ende & Geschichte erklärt

Jennifer Lawrence does a fine job and her career is certainly not going to suffer for her performance. I am not exactly a JLaw "fan" could live without the Hunger Games , although I will pay closer attention to her future performances, especially if she pulls off more roles like this one really liked Winter's Bone, by the way.

As I understand the Hollywood scene, it is a respectable personal decision to take on a challenging role in an avant garde picture, especially if you have already banked serious money from popular roles in blockbusters.

Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ed Harris also do their respective parts justice--a well-acted film by A-listers, overall.

Camera work and special effects are also impressive. The story is genuinely disturbing in a Requiem for a Dream way, so don't go if you can't handle that sort of thing.

Seriously, not for the faint of heart. Aside from the biblical allegory stuff, I found the character portrayals creepy as hell in a sur?

Hell is other people! I applaud Mr. Aronofsky for keeping his vision intact all the way to the big screen.

For reference, I just don't need any more movies based on superheros, comic books except The Tenth or Gen 13 , children's cartoons, vampires fighting werewolves, or horror stick about unfriending weirdos on facebook.

She was in a relationship with a boy known as "Crazy JP," who had escaped a sanatorium. Do-joon beats another prisoner who calls him "retard.

She tries to apologize, saying she wanted to free them both from hardship and offers to give him acupuncture to forget his pain, but he tells her he never wants to see her again.

The mother learns from a camera-shop worker that Ah-jung had frequent nosebleeds. Ah-jung's friend is attacked by two boys who are looking for Ah-jung's phone, but the mother rescues her.

She pays Jin-tae to interrogate the boys, who confesses that Ah-jung accepted rice from boys in exchange for sex, but that she used her phone to secretly take pictures of all her partners.

Do-joon remembers seeing a man in the building on the night of Ah-jung's death. He identifies an elderly man from one of the pictures on Ah-jung's phone.

His mother remembers the man as the junk collector she bought an umbrella from. She goes to his home on the pretense of offering him charity medical services and asks him about what he saw.

The junk collector ultimately reveals that Do-joon is the real killer - he had gone into the abandoned building while following Ah-jung and asked her questions about boys.

Insulted, Ah-jung throws a large rock at him and calls him a retard, causing Do-joon to throw it back in retaliation, inadvertently killing her.

He then drags her to the rooftop in panic. His mother is horrified by the truth, and when the junk collector learns that Do-joon will be released and the case reopened, he immediately decides to report Do-joon's guilt to the police.

The mother, fearing for her son, kills the collector and burns his house down. Later, the police tell her that they have found the "real" killer: Crazy JP, who is being presumed guilty after Ah-jung's blood was found on his shirt.

The police assume it came from attempted rape, and only the mother knows that JP's story, that the blood is the result of Ah-jung's nose bleeding during consensual sex, is true.

Feeling guilty, she visits JP and cries for him, knowing he is going to jail for a crime he did not commit. Do-joon is freed from prison, and Jin-tae picks him up.

They pass the junk collector's burned-down house on the way and stop to pick through the rubble.

During dinner, he muses to his mother that whoever dragged Ah-jung up to the roof was probably trying to alert others so they could help her quickly.

As his mother departs for a bus station to go on a trip, Do-joon returns her acupuncture kit, which he found in the remains of the junk collector's house, and tells her to be more careful.

His mother tearfully leaves, shocked by this discovery. On the bus, she sits in shock before giving herself acupuncture to forget her pain and then dances with the other passengers.

Every shot of the film is either tight in on Lawrence or presenting her point of view. Another alarm bell, that we're dealing purely with the subjective in this narrative.

But it makes for an intense experience, a sometimes disorientating sidecar-whirl around one woman's nightmare. There's no better word for it, really.

Floorboards bleed. Panic attacks momentarily turn the house charred and blackened. Every mundane noise, be it footfall, door-knock or the whining judder of the washing machine, is jarring and only amplified by the absence of a music score Clint Mansell must be well put out.

Then, when he finally does regain his poetic mojo via a clumsy burst of tragi-comic melodrama on Aronofsky's part he only makes things worse.

We've got so used to seeing Bardem as a baddie, it's hard not to have the worst expectations of him here. Yet he's no villain, at least not in a nice, simple, straightforward movie way.

Aronofsky isn't one to shy away from metaphor. He's always liked his fat and ripe as you'll know if you've seen The Fountain.

But in mother! Religion, history, the media, sexual politics, the crumbling of civilisation, creativity itself — it's all interior decoration for Aronofsky.

The film definitely earns its 'not for everyone' caveat. But at least it has something to say — almost too much, you could argue.

For all its discomfiting flourishes and occasional blunders, it's hardly a hollow construction and far, far from forgettable.

Like all our most vivid bad dreams, it snags the mind. See more Jennifer. A committed dancer struggles to maintain her sanity after winning the lead role in a production of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake".
