Guppies keep dying! Water temp is 78F, light pebble substrate, 1 back filter, 1 small sponge filter, some plants and decor… all readings look good regarding chlorine, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia levels, alkalinity, etc.
Hi Gian, how strange! I would recommened giving the tank a full weeks to recycle with the new sponge filter in. Allow a bed of helpful bacteria to build up and monitor the water parameters over the next few weeks before adding Guppies again.
I started this hobby about a month ago, I bought some plants and 12 baby guppies. They were sold as feeder in my local pet store. I bought them because they were cheap and the guy told me they were harder to kill, so good for a beginner.

About Robert Articles. There are so many factors you need to take into consideration in deciding how to feed them properly.
Pellet fish food can also be used; however, you should ensure the pellets are small enough for their mouth. Popular live or freeze-dried foods suitable for guppies include brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms.
If your fish do eat too much, it can block their intestines. A sign to watch for is a trail of poop behind your fish signifying you are overfeeding your fish.
Moreover, the food your guppies leave uneaten will rot and may pollute the water in your aquarium. Make sure not to overfeed your guppies in the first place, but if you did that — remove any uneaten food as soon as possible.
If keeping guppies, be sure to feed them properly and to keep the right combination of guppies together to avoid issues and you will enjoy this small acquisition.
They can, but it is better if the guppies that are with the betta are feeder guppies. Fancy guppies are able to live and thrive among male and female bettas, but fancy guppies, having larger more colorful fins, can look like a small male betta.
This poses a risk to keeping them together, but more often than not the bettas will be just fine with them.
Did that answer your question? Idk, we have Berta fish at home, but my class cares for guppies, this is an assignment to care for guppies that were doing.
Betta fish are amazing pets, they have a bad name because they almost always fish a new betta fish or a more intimadating fish immediately.
However i have a 20 gallon tank where i keep my 3 betta fish and they all live in harmony. I leave the clear bag in the water long after theyre done adjusting so they can get all aggression out before i release the fish and put them together.
You never want to danger your fish so keep in mind if they still go at the bag between them for more than 15 minuets seperate them because it causes unnecessary stress to the fish.
It creates a beautiful tank when you keep bettas in a community tank i would recomend it if they can live together with no fin nipping.
Almost always. That said, we added two female bettas to a 20 gallon high that only had three guppies in it.
One betta was very chill, while the other one chased the guppies. Still, this is usually considered a safe combination. Perhaps with more guppies, we will not have that problem.
I have a few questions. I am staring a Guppy tank as a gift for my fiance and I would like to have another breed of fish in addition to my guppies.
What fish are the best tank mates for them?? I have been looking around and I am just not getting consistent answers. This text was pretty informational and I was wondering if you could maybe help me out a bit??
Firstly I hope your fiance have fish-keeping experience and love fishes. With regards to tank mates for guppies, you could consider neon tetras, swordtail or even mollies.
Stay away from Chinese algae eaters as they can be aggressive, they get too large for most beginner aquariums and they eat less algae as they grow.
Either a male or female Betta not both would be a good addition. Occasionally, you might have a guppy who likes to nip at any long tails, whatever species they are.
On the other hand, I have never had a Betta that was aggressive towards any other species. Small tetras like neons or cardinals are also a good choice.
Larger tetras, rams and barbs can all be biters. Lastly, the best way to keep a peaceful tank other than choosing the right fish is to not put too many fish in it.
Besides the constant battles to be waged to keep the water quality safe, an overstocked aquarium causes stressed fish and stressed fish easily become either aggressors or victims.
I once made the mistake of adding a female betta to my tank, assuming from what I'd heard from the shopkeeper that they didn't nip!
The betta is now back where she belongs, in the shop, and mine are healing nicely. I keep mine with platys and cherry barbs.
They all get on fine, great fish with a peaceful community. I've also kept them with black and balloon mollies , otos , and corys without any problems.
From: Mommy of Many! I took mom out and put her into her own little tank. I figured she was prego and she was as a couple of weeks later she had about 20 babies.
I removed all the babies and put them into their own tank. It has been about a month. I have cleaned moms tank completely as in mom was in a measuring cup on the counter and the tank completely empty , not even gravel.
I looked today and saw mom chasing around another group of babies. Now I need to know why? There has been no male at all in almost 2 months yet I have babies.
Are guppies capable of asexual reproduction? The female can have several batches of fry from just one fertilization from a male.
From: Maddy - New Tank I want to have guppies and other livebearers in my community tank that is cycling. I have heard they need salt and wondering if the salt would harm the other fish I put in too, or if livebearers can cope without.
Looking forward to an answer! Oh man, you don't need to subject fish to the cycle nowadays. There are products on the market to quickly cycle a tank.
Check out the aquarium nitrogen cycle page for more info on these products. By subjecting your fish to the cycle you are most likely shortening their life spans if they even survive the aquarium cycle at all.
As far as salt goes, I wouldn't put it in the tank unless it was a Molly fish tank. Most commonly available livebearers will do just fine without the addition of aquarium salt.
From: The Giver I disagree with the aquarium salt in the above posting. I agree that it is great for mollies.
However, it has been my personal experience that it does wonders to prevent ick and other diseases when added even less than monthly and in small quantities of course to the tank.
I have never had a problem. If anything, I have an overbreeding problem! Related Fish Profiles Xiphophorus maculatus Platy Another popular freshwater aquarium fish species and a very hardy livebearer.

Xiphophorus maculatus Platy Another popular freshwater aquarium fish species and a very hardy livebearer. From: Mark via email Mine is pregnant but I dont know how long and what to do when it gives birth?
Please help. The gestation period for guppies is usually about 28 days but it can take longer for them to have babies.
Sometimes up to 38 or 40 days. After she has the babies, return the female to the tank but leave the babies in the breeder box.
Feed them very small amounts of brine shrimp 3 or 4 times a day. After about 2 weeks you can start to feed them crushed flake food. Figure out what you are going to do when they start to overcrowd in the breeder box.
Instead of buying a new aquarium, you may want to get a tank divider for your main tank. When you can put them in with the other fish in your main tank depends on the size of your other fish.
Check out the article on breeding them for more information linked above. Enjoy them and watch them grow.
From: Roland I have a few pregnant females, and would like to know - how many babies will they be likely to have, and do they give them all at the same time?
The number of babies that a female can have ranges from as little as 4 to as many as The female should pass all of the babies within a few hours.
If you don't already have one, look into getting a breeder net or a breeding box to house the female until she releases the babies.
See the question above for more information. From: Bodycount I just recently purchased 3 females and 1 male. Instead of keeping them I bought 2 red-tail black sharks and 1 albino red-tail in hopes that they would help control the baby population.
The little buggers are fast and get away from parent guppies and the sharks whenever they come close to them. I will keep you informed on how its going.
Alrighty then. Sorry to say, but there is a small flaw in your plan, Dr. The redtail sharks will mostly fight each other because they are very territorial.
