Dolman joined Howard and Lucas at Skywalker Ranch for a series of lengthy story conferences, and wrote seven drafts of his script between the spring and fall of Various major film studios turned down the chance to distribute and co-finance it with Lucasfilm because they believed the fantasy genre was unsuccessful.
This was largely due to films such as Krull , Legend , Dragonslayer , and Labyrinth. Ladd and Lucas shared a relationship as far back as the mids, when Ladd, running 20th Century Fox , greenlighted Lucas's idea for Star Wars.
Lucas based the character of General Kael Pat Roach on the film critic Pauline Kael , a fact that was not lost on Kael in her printed review of the film.
She referred to General Kael as an "homage a moi". Similarly, the two-headed dragon was called an "Eborsisk" after film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert.
Principal photography began on April 2, , and ended the following October. Interior footage took place at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire , England, while location shooting took place in Wales and New Zealand.
He then sent a group of photographers to South China to photograph specific scenery, which was then used for background blue screen footage.
Willow recites what he thinks is the appropriate spell, but turns the goat into an ostrich, a peacock, a tortoise and, finally, a tiger, before returning her to normal.
ILM supervisor Dennis Muren considered using stop motion animation for the scene. Muren found both stop motion and optical effects to be too technically challenging and decided that the transformation scene would be a perfect opportunity for ILM to create advances with digital morphing technology.
He proposed filming each animal, and the actress doubling for Hayes, and then feeding the images into a computer program developed by Doug Smythe.
Smythe began development of the necessary software in September Therefore I listened to, studied and analysed a lot of music.
I also enjoy metaphors, the art of quoting and of cycles. The harmonic draft of the Willow score, and most particularly its spiritual side, came from such a cycle, from such mythology and music history that I was taught, and that I myself convey with my own emotions and compositions.
The original mix has yet to be found and restored to its original glory. The film was shown and promoted at the Cannes Film Festival.
Lucas had hoped it would earn as much money as E. Strong home video, and television sales added to its profits.
The film was released to mixed reviews from critics. The critical consensus read, "State-of-the-art special effects and an appealing performance from Warwick Davis can't quite save Willow from its slow pace and generic story.
Desson Thomson writing in The Washington Post , explained " Rob Reiner 's similar fairytale adventure The Princess Bride which the cinematographer Adrian Biddle also shot managed to evoke volumes more without razzle-dazzle.
It's a sad thing to be faulting Lucas, maker of the Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark , for forgetting the tricks of entertainment.
The film is probably too much for young children and possibly too much of the same for cynics. The release included an audio commentary by Warwick Davis and two "making of" featurettes.
In the commentary, Davis confirms that there were a number of " lost scenes " previously rumored to have been deleted from it including a battle in the valley, Willow battling a boy who transforms into a shark in a lake while retrieving Fin Raziel, and an extended sorceress duel at the climax.
In , Tor Books released The Willow Game, a two- to six-player adventure board game based on the film and designed by Greg Costikyan.
Three video games based on the film were released. Wayland Drew adapted Lucas's story into a film novel, providing additional background information to several major characters and various additional scenes, including an encounter with a lake monster near Razel's island which was filmed, but ultimately not used in the movie.
They take place about fifteen years after the original film and feature the teenage Elora Danan as a central character.
Madmartigan and Sorsha are killed off almost immediately in the first book and play no further part in the series.
Beginning in , Lucas and Davis discussed the possibility of a television series serving as a sequel to Willow.
By May , Howard confirmed that there were ongoing discussions regarding a sequel, while confirming the project would not be called Willow 2.
Jonathan Kasdan will write the television series, while Warwick Davis will reprise his role from the original film.

Written by Dan Williams. I attended a screen writing class once, and the teacher said that the worst movie ever made was "Willow" What an idiot.
Obviously, this man has no soul. Anyway, it must have been this sort of "I'm too good for that" attitude that killed "Willow" in the theaters.
I remember seeing previews for it when I was a kid, and there was nothing more in the world that I had wanted to watch.
It was my favorite genre. And even though many will say that "Lord of the Rings" is better, I have to disagree. The music from Horner's great I can still whistle the adventure theme song, and often do sometimes.
Val Kilmer as Madmartigan was a great rogue hero, who had plenty of great lines, laughs. Sorcia was by Joanne Whalley, was hot as hell General Kael who was supposedly based on one of Lucas' critics is awesome.
His look spawned an entire decade of me thinking that people with skull masks were horribly cool. The woman who played Fin Razel sp?
The Brownies were hysterical. And last but not least, give it up for Billy Barty and Warwick Davis, little people with big roles.
I think little people probably thank Mr. Lucas and Ron Howard for making them stars for once, for giving them a showcase piece.
Davis really had no better role in his life than this one. And he shined in it. Well, if that particular teacher is reading this by any chance, I hope you go back and re-watch this as a kid.
For me, and obviously many others on this website, the movie was more than a fun, little escape If there's one thing that pre-prequel George Lucas was good at, it was at giving the audience a good time Indiana Jones, Willow, Star Wars Each of them with charming heroes, obvious bad guys, magic, swords, and humor.
I bet she about choked on her own vomit when she saw how much fun everyone had with the film. And "Willow" is the same thing.
It's pure magic. Pure escape. Especially good for children, but good for the adults, too. If you can't have fun with this one, than you better go get your laughs from movies like "White Chicks" Sign In.

At once an epic celebration and a gentle spoof of the sword-and-sorcery genre, the film concerns the efforts by little person Willow Ufgood Warwick Davis to protect a sacred infant from the machinations of a wicked queen Jean Marsh.
This is true enough, except that neither one of those properties offered such offbeat casting choices as Billy Barty and Jean Marsh.
Executive producer George Lucas has through the conduit of screenwriter Bob Dolman added elements of his own Star Wars saga to the stew.
The results are generally satisfactory, though the film is sometimes weighed down by too much plot, and the action sequences may not be suitable for very young children.
Incidentally, this is the film where co-star Val Kilmer met his future wife Joanne Whalley. Ron Howard.

Warwick Davis, Val Kilmar, and Joanne Whalley all give good performances; especially Davis, for whom this would become a seminal role.
The story is pretty derivative especially of Star Wars but the characters are quite interesting and a lot of fun. However, the special effects are rather dated, which weakens the film somewhat.
Dann M Super Reviewer. Apr 29, Willow is a movie that really gets overshadowed by other much better Fantasy films of the 80's The Princess Bride, Labyrinth but still manages to be a fun gem of a Sword and Sorcery movie.
This movie follows a Nelwyn Dwarf sorcerer-in-training named Willow Ufgood Warwick Davis who is tasked in protecting a small baby prophesized to defeat and evil Queen named Bavmorda Jean Marsh.
He must leave his small village to embark on this quest. Along the way, Willow meets an interesting cast of allies including the down on his luck warrior Madmartigan Val Kilmer , the Queen's daughter Sorsha Joanne Whalley , an old wizard named Raziel Patricia Hayes and two Brownies named Vonkhar Phil Fondacaro and Rool Kevin Pollack , an almost fairly like race of little people.
I think this film is lacking in the whimsicality of the actual fantasy world. The actual world just seems devoid of life. Good performances from Davis and Kilmer make this film quite interesting, but can't save it from it's rather slow paced plot.
The film's highlight for me is the soundtrack James Horner , which in my opinion is really underrated. Not even an academy nomination?
They really dropped the ball in my opinion. Overall a decent fantasy film, and I can see how many people would love it.
For me, it's a fun watch but nothing to write home about. Brendan L Super Reviewer. Jan 14, Willow is undeniably cute and provides decent entertainment, but the story is too cliched and unoriginal to succeed.
